My Rating:

GoodReads ★ Amazon ★ B&N ★ TBD
A sexy standalone novel from New York Times and international bestselling author Elle Kennedy. THE RISK takes you back to the world of hot hockey players, feisty heroines, bro banter, and steamy scenes...
Everyone says I’m a bad girl. They’re only partly right—I don’t let fear rule me, and I certainly don’t care what people think. But I draw the line at sleeping with the enemy. As the daughter of Briar’s head hockey coach, I’d be vilified if I hooked up with a player from a rival team.
And that’s who Jake Connelly is. Harvard’s star forward is arrogant, annoying, and too attractive for his own good. But fate is cruel—I require his help to secure a much-coveted internship, and the sexy jerk isn’t making it easy for me.
I need Connelly to be my fake boyfriend.
For every fake date…he wants a real one.
Which means this bad girl is in big trouble. Nothing good can come from sneaking around with Jake Connelly. My father would kill me, my friends will revolt, and my post-college career is on the line. But while it’s getting harder and harder to resist Jake’s oozing sex appeal and cocky grin, I refuse to fall for him.
That’s the one risk I’m not willing to take.
I have to say, I think this is hands down my favorite book from Elle Kennedy's new adult college hockey series. I even liked it better than The Deal! I think part of that is because Brenna is kind of my soul sister, in that she's a sarcastic asshole and she never lets people see the real her. I loved the concept that she wears red lipstick not because it's her trademark, but because it's "her armor". Oh, honey!

I loved Brenna since we met her in The Chase, and I was amused by her friendship with Summer. You don't have to read The Chase to enjoy this book, but you get the background on Brenna and Hollis in this book and Fitz and Summer if you do. It's also where she first meets Jake freaking Connelly. Oh man, I think I fell in love with this book because of all the sarcastic banter. Like, literally was laughing out loud at this one. I loved the push-pull between Brenna and Jake, and I was laughing at the "daddy jokes" they made at each other.

I love the fake dating trope a lot, but I think I just wanted there to be more than one fake date and real date in this book. It wasn't completely bad though, because I really loved how these two got together, but then had to keep it a secret because of their schools' rivalry. Although, I think Brenna could have told Summer, because Fitz hates drama so he probably would have reeled her in. I really disliked Jake's best friend Hazel, it was so obvious that she was into him! But, sorry guys, sometimes you don't notice these things like at all! It made me so mad because Hazel puts things into Jake's head and it causes a rift between him and Brenna. Girl, bye!

I really loved the fact that Brenna was trying to do something with sports journalism and oh my god that guy she interviewed with was the worst! I have to really thank the guys I worked with when I did sports journalism, because they never made me feel like that. I was really happy at the end of the book when it comes to what happens with her career in the field. I'm being vague here to not give any spoilers.

Brenna also has a very dark past that we eventually learn about in this book and it's why her relationship with her dad is so strained. I did find it a little hard to believe the reason why her dad gives that he is like this. However, I think he was just trying his best being a single-parent. Oh and we learn the dirt on his rival, which I totally saw from a mile away.

I was hoping we will get a book about Hollis because he truly fascinates me, but he ends up with someone as a subplot of this book, so I'm not sure if we will get their story. The next book is about Hunter, and I can't wait to read it.
