In this Brooklyn Bruisers romance, a hockey goalie has to trust his instincts, even when taking a shot to the heart...
Mike Beacon is a champion at defending the net, but off the ice, he's not so lucky. A widower and a single father, he's never forgotten Lauren Williams, the ex who gave him the best year of his life. When Lauren reappears in the Bruisers' office during the play-offs, Beacon sees his chance to make things right.
Lauren hates that she's forced to travel with the team she used to work for and the man who broke her heart. There's still undeniable sexual tension running between her and Mike, but she won't go down that road again. She's focused on her plans for the future--she doesn't need a man to make her dreams of motherhood come true.
Lauren plays her best defensive game, but she's no match for the dark-eyed goalie. When the field of play moves to Florida, things heat up on the beach.
One of Mike's biggest fans doesn't approve--his teenage daughter. But a true competitor knows not to waste the perfect shot at love.
I have to admit, that Pipe Dreams was not my favorite of this series. I also debated if I should read it or not because I wasn't really a fan of Lauren. In the previous books she comes off as a huge bitch, and no one knows why. In this book we get to understand her a little better, and I think in Hard Hitter there is a comment from Patrick that gives us some detail about why she is this way. I was glad that she kind of comes to realization that she is so closed off to people, so it was nice to see her realize this and come out of her shell a bit.

This book is before Brooklynaire, which is my favorite of the series, but they kind of run at the same time. So that was interesting to read about, especially since I read that one first. I loved Lauren's interactions with Nate, and Nate is actually the best. He loves his hockey team and his tech empire, but he also really cares about the people in his employ. He pushes them for good reasons, and I love the snippy banter between him and Lauren.

This story gives us the past of what happened between Beacon and Lauren before and the present. It's a tough situation. In the past, Beacon and his wife split because they were both unhappy and he caught his wife cheating on him. He had feelings for Lauren, but it isn't until they separate that he acts on it. Although, everyone treats Lauren like the "other women" even though she really isn't! Beacon ends up going back to his wife because she had really bad cancer and he needed to be with her, but he breaks Lauren's heart. So when we catch up to the present Beacon is trying to right that wrong.

I didn't totally love Beacon. He says he's a shoot-first-ask-questions-later kind of guy, and that made me not like him that much. The first sex scene between the two, he doesn't even ask her if she's on the pill! That shit bothers me in romance novels. Like have a conversation with your partner first! I also didn't totally love that when he finds out Lauren is trying to have a baby, he wants to be the father. Like, boy bye!

Eventually, like Lauren, I did warm up to him. He is a great father, but the whole dynamic of his life and his love is really complicated. I did really feel for his daughter because she really didn't know the whole story. This gets resolved and her and Lauren do bond a little, so I was glad about that. I did think Elsa was a super realistic teen, because her emotions are all over the place! It's a confusing time at that age.

I think I didn't love this one as much as the others is just how messy the whole thing is with Beacon and his daughter and what everyone says about Lauren. I still love this series though, and I did read this one in one sitting.
