#BookishThoughts: Young Adult Romance is my jam, FIGHT ME!

I haven't been that active on the blog this past week and one of those reasons is because I got inspired to start working on my WIP again, so all my free time has been consumed by trying to write and rework the manuscript I have been working on. So it got me thinking it was time to do another Bookish Thoughts posts to talk about why I love YA contemporary, but more importantly YA romance books. They are kind of my jam.

If you come to my blog, you probably expect a lot about Star Wars, Scifi & Fantasy, and you might not pay that much attention to the YA contemporary I read. If you have been following me for awhile, you'll know that my favorite author is Meg Cabot. I grew up reading Cabot's books such as The Princess Diaries series, alongside books by Sarah Dessen. These are kind of the books I love to read. They are quick reads, and everyone gets a happy ending. YAY!

So it's kind of the stories that I want to write myself. I wrote two very BAD manuscripts that I have literally thrown away, and started fresh with #3. I started writing this back in 2010, and I was heavily sending out query letter to lit agents, but in 2013 I stopped. I know at the time I was working 7 days a week, trying to make a career in sports journalism and it wasn't working, so I kinda left writing to the wayside. I had been trying to get back into it, but I don't know something just clicked in me lately. I actually went through and put together a spreadsheet of all those rejections, and to be honest I don't think I was ready to be published yet, which I think is a great thing to discover now that I'm looking at everything with fresh eyes. Still not sure I'm ready yet, but I really want to work at it. I've been super unhappy lately, but writing about these two doofs falling in love as given me so much joy. (If you are wondering what my WIP is about I refer to it as a Hockey Love Story.)

I'm started to get into reading more contemporary adult fiction and reading more romance books, but sometimes I don't want all the "details", you know what I mean? It's fine if that's your thing, and I've read books like that, but I think I like that a lot of romance geared to teens does it in a way that it leaves a lot of things up to the imagination. Or never directly tells you so you have to kind of just imagine or have your own head canons. That might annoy some people, but it's kind of an appeal to me. Doesn't mean there isn't a lot of kissing! Yeah, I said it, I like kissing books, FIGHT ME!

I just love reading about people that fall in love for the first time, and are kind of clueless. I thing I relate to it a lot since i've been with my boyfriend for 8 years, but before we met we were both kind of clueless with the whole dating thing. So I guess I like to write characters like that because I think a lot of people can relate.

Do you love YA contemporary romance? Why or why not?

Happy Reads Everyone!
